Hawaii

September 23, 2014

This past Summer we took a family trip to Hawaii. We were lucky enough to stay in a Condo with a great view of Waikiki beach. While we were there we visited the usual tourists places like the North Shore, Pearl Harbor, and the Dole Plantation. It was an awesome experience and one of the best vacations I have taken. I think the reason why it was so relaxing is because you inherit the slower “island time” feel of the community. It’s quite different from the spring break crowds of Cabo and Cancun.

Of course there was food to be eaten on this trip and below are some of the highlights that I recommend you try when you go.

Ahi poke nachos: won ton chips topped with fresh ahi, avocado, Maui onion, bonito flakes, nori, and sriracha aioli.

First meal in Hawaii, the off-menu Banana Pancakes from the Beach House Restaurant

Garlic furikake fries with chili aioli at the Beach Bar.

Food Trucks on the North Shore

Garlic shrimp scampi from Giovanni's Shrimp truck.

Zee Coffee on the North Shore serving Coffee Gallery

Original Dole Whip in a waffle cone from the Dole Plantation.

First stop at the monthly food truck event Eat The Street was Wow Wow Lemonade. Mango tea (Arnold Palmer) for me and Pineapple Li Hing Lemonade for the Mrs.

Dough-based Belgian Waffle with pumpkin puree, cinnamon, and home-made whipped cream by Wow Wow Lemonade. You can find them at farmers markets in Oahu.

A piece of heaven can be found at Liliha Bakery. So many sweets to choose from.

Liliha Bakery's famous coco puffs! Cream puff pastry filled with chocolate pudding and topped with a macadamia nut chantilly frosting!

Great mornings in Oahu begin at Leonard's Bakery. The classic bakery is known for their fresh hot malasadas covered in sugar.

A fresh hot malasada with dobash filling. Still looking for a place in LA that compares.
