Delicious elevated Baja Mexican cuisine that centers around a wood-fired grill with a focus on fresh seafood, paired with premium made-from-scratch craft cocktails, in a friendly, captivating ambience - that's SOL Cocina, Playa Vista's newest hot spot. How new? It's only been open 12 days. How hot? The wait for a table on Saturday night was over an hour.
But don't let that discourage you from making a reservation. It's really not their fault...well, partially yes, for making such great food. For a long time now, Playa Vista residents (currently over 6,000) have been waiting for a full service restaurant that offers the ambience and food to have a great night out. I say that as a resident of the community myself. Before SOL, the options were pretty limited to Coffee Bean, casual eats or Whole Foods' salad bar - nothing wrong with that though.
SOL Cocina brings a sophisticated dining option to the booming Silicon Beach area. It's casual enough to bring your family and kids for lunch but also nice enough to have a great date. The space is warm and inviting with a full view of the kitchen operating the wood-fired grill and carefully handling the fresh catch of the day.
The menu really highlights Baja style Mexican cuisine. You have fish tacos, ceviche, seasonal ingredients, and grilled meats marinated in lime and mezcal. Speaking of mezcal, the restaurant also boasts over 70 premium tequilas, including some limited private label single barrel offerings. Everything is prepared fresh Yes, I know we hear that all the time, but it really seems to be the case at SOL Cocina. The ceviche for example, is sushi-grade fish and prepared at your table. Same goes for for the guacamole and the SOL Grande Casa Noble Margarita, that is shaken table side.
The Taco Vampiro with carne asada and chipotle sauce is a flavor bomb. The Hot & Raw Tropical Ceviche with with habanero and tropical fruit served with sweet potato and red beet chips is one of the best new versions of a ceviche you can get in LA.
SOL Cocina, really is a great dining destination on the Westside. The great atmosphere, mouthwatering dishes and friendly service (thank you Ricky & Stacey!) make it one of the best places I've visited in while. I still need to come back and try more, but I can already see SOL being one of my favorite restaurants in Playa Vista.
