Malibu Farm: Fresh. Organic. Local.

January 16, 2015

If you’re looking for a true farm-to-table eatery that serves fresh organic food and comes with an ocean view, then drive up PCH until you get to Malibu Farm. Helene Henderson’s cafe on the Malibu pier is a perfect place to enjoy simple and delicious food.

From her beginnings as a private chef who also hosted dinner parties in her Malibu backyard farm, Helene has taken those delicious meals and has invited us all to enjoy them at the cafe.  Malibu Farm is quaint, rustic, and full of character. It gets very busy during holidays and weekends but is worth the visit.

For breakfast there are dishes like quinoa oatmeal, farm scrambled eggs and Swedish mini pancakes. There are salads and sandwiches, as well as a perfectly made grass-fed beef burger. The burger is seasoned with just salt and pepper, the way it was intended to be. The havarti cheese, pepperoncini aioli, tomato, and arugula, all elevate the burger. Now, normally you would think a burger would come with fries, but not at “the Farm.” Helene serves it with her popular broccoli mashed potatoes, a great way to sneak in those greens. And for more added greenery, the Apple Kale juice was the best kale juice I’ve ever had.

Local is the key here. Everything from produce, meats, and coffee, is local and as organic as possible. You can tell that’s the essence and it is authentically executed in everything that comes out of the kitchen. In her cookbook, Helene writes, “Wherever I go, I will always be me. I cook what I cook, wherever I am. At the cafe, we serve the same dishes we cooked in my classes and served at the farm dinners.” That’s the kind of the feeling you get at Malibu Farm, the feeling that you’re having great food that’s simple and true.
