Skyscrapers and Churro Tots: Border Grill's DTLA Brunch Scene

July 31, 2015

I had one of the most amazing margaritas of my life! Pineapple vanilla infused tequila with fresh lime and organic agave nectar, was the magical concoction. One sip and it was like I was on vacation in Playa Del Carmen, enjoying the sound of the waves crashing while the sun sets in the background. Except, I’m not in Mexico and I’m surrounded by skyscrapers on a Sunday in Downtown LA, and it’s not even 11:00 AM yet.

Border Grill in DTLA has recently revamped their weekend brunch menu. If you haven’t been, imagine a quiet Figueora Street on a Sunday morning. There’s no traffic or noise, just calm, quiet streets, a break from the work week chaos. On the corner of 5th and Fig is your city oasis with unlimited brunch plates and, if you please, unlimited mimosas.

Of course there are specialty drinks like that delicious Pineapple Vanilla Margarita, or the Cafe de Olla - which has espresso, cinnamon, orange, all spice, and clove. Think of it like the flavors of a Mexican hot chocolate but as a latte. With over 20 small plates to get through, you’re going to get your fill that morning.

The Steak and Eggs Ranchero is a must! Also, the Chorizo and Potato Molote is a nice savory dish to order. If you’re in the mood for something on the sweet side, then go for the Bread Pudding French Toast, served with caramelized bananas and coconut syrup. The ultimate sweet finish to brunch is those incredible churro tots that are infused with dulce de leche and served with fresh whipped cream. You can easily eat a few dozen - yes, that good!

There are a lot of other great dishes to order like a Pressed Cubano sandwich or the Chilaquiles Verde. Also delicious vegetarian options like a Portabello Mushroom Cubano, Guava Empanada, or Vegan Pozole Verde round out the menu. Great dishes, paired with great drinks makes Border Grill a perfect brunch find in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles.

Also, just so you know, you should check out Border Grill's upcoming Latin Street Food Fights on Tuesday nights, where your favorite street foods from around the world face off in a head to head battle. First up on August 4th is Spain vs Mexico!
